Optimism in Action: The Graceful Response of French Diver Alexis Janard

A Dive of Resilience

The recent incident involving French Olympic diver Alexis Janard at the opening ceremony of the new Aquatics center in Paris, where he tumbled into the pool after falling off his diving board in front of President Mitterrand, has sparked discussions on resilience, optimism, and the power of positive thinking. In a moment that could have been incredibly embarrassing, Janard handled the situation with grace and composure. Instead of feeling ashamed or defeated, he reassured everyone that he was fine and that these things happen.

Matt Biondi in the 1988 Seoul Olympics

This incident brings to mind the story of Matt Biondi, an American Olympic swimmer in the 1988 Seoul Olympics who was considered a washout after losing his first two events. However, psychologist Marty Seligman, known for his work on optimism and pessimism as explanatory styles of life, was working with Olympic US swimmers, where he identified optimism as a determining factor in success. Bondi was a standout due to his high optimism scores. And so, despite his disappointing losses, Seligman insisted that Biondi was still the one to watch. And he was right, for Biondi went on to win five gold medals, proving the power of optimism in overcoming challenges.

The Power of Optimism: Embracing Setbacks as Pathways to Growth

Optimists view setbacks as challenges and opportunities, but pessimists see them as crushing defeats. For example, in a live concert in Central Park in 1967, Barbra Streisand blanked out on the lyrics to one of her songs. How easy would it have been for Streisand to have joked with the audience and invited them – who undoubtedly knew every word to her songs – to sing it for her at that moment? It would have been a heart-captivating moment.

Instead, when she forgot the words in front of 125,000 people, she was shocked and terrified and opted out of performing live for nearly thirty years - until almost the end of her career.

We may be born with natural proclivities for optimism or pessimism, but it's important to remember that optimism is also a learnable skill. This skill can help us choose how we process and navigate life's uncertainties, offering a practical tool for personal growth and self-improvement.

The incident with the young French diver serves as a poignant example of how resilience and the power of optimism undoubtedly helped him avoid succumbing to career-ending embarrassment and feelings of failure. Instead of allowing the incident to define him, he used it as an opportunity to display grace and composure, showcasing the strength of his optimistic mindset.

Navigating Challenges with Faith and Hope

This theme of optimism and resilience in the face of challenges resonates strongly with Jewish thought, which often emphasizes the importance of faith, hope, and perseverance in overcoming trials and tribulations. Drawing on the strength of one's beliefs and convictions, individuals can weather storms and emerge stronger on the other side.

As we reflect on this lesson during Passover, a time of breaking free from constraints and embracing new possibilities, we are reminded of the power of optimism in navigating uncertain times. This year, as we find ourselves confronted with ongoing challenges and adversities, a little optimism can go a long way in helping us persevere and thrive.

Thoughts to Ponder for Passover

1.         Reflect on a time when you faced a setback or challenge. How did you initially respond to it? Were you able to maintain an optimistic outlook throughout the experience, or did you struggle with feelings of defeat?

2.         Consider the concept of learned optimism. How can you cultivate and strengthen your own sense of optimism in the face of adversity?

3.         Passover is a time of liberation and renewal. How can you incorporate the themes of faith, hope, and perseverance into your journey of self-discovery and growth during this season? How might these values align with the themes of Passover, a time of breaking free from constraints and embracing possibilities?
